Internationally known as the “Heart of the Alps”, Innsbruck, the capital of Austria, is one of the greatest ski cities in the world. Nestled into a narrow valley beneath rugged mountain peaks, it offers both beauty and culture with Old-World charm, rich museums and galleries with easy access to the country’s world class ski resorts including Igls, Axamer Linzum and the Stubai Glacier, all known for their variety of terrain. A free shuttle services seven resorts, all accessed with one interchangeable ski pass. Additional ski excursions allow you to ski nearby St. Anton and Kitzbuhel with the same lift tickets.

Ski enthusiasts will appreciate the vertical drop of the Stubai Glacier at 5,784’ it compares with other great European mountains such as: St Anton, Austria 4,521’; Contina, Italy; 5,828’, Meribel; France 5,120’; Val D’Isere, France 5,310’; Courchevel, France 5,280’; Davos, Switzerland 4,237’; or St. Moritz, Switzerland 4,858’ to name a few. Compare to the U.S. and Canada: Banff-Lake Louise 3,516’; Whistler 5278’; Vail 3,200’; Telluride 3,522’; Steamboat 3,600’; Snowbird 3,100’; Jackson Hole 4,139’.

The ski areas of Innsbruck are a dream come true for skiers, snowboarders, carvers, deep powder specialists and cross-country skiers, they offer gentle slopes for beginners, steep ones for advanced skiers, extremes for pros, etc., The superb lift and cable car network accesses 9 different ski regions with 210 lifts for 520 kilometers of perfectly prepared pistes, numerous touring routes and deep powder slopes.

There is more to Austria than just skiing. There’s Austria itself! An Alpine country of incomparable charm and centuries-old tradition. Enjoy a tour through the charming villages around Innsbruck and admire the historical farm houses that are so characteristic of the Tyrolean countryside. Continue on to Wattens, home of the Swarovski Crystal factory and the unique Crystal World - a fantasy world of glittering crystal and a magnificent collection of crystal art.

Sightseeing opportunities include picturesque excursions to Bavarian castles such as the Linderhof Castle, one of the fantasy palaces of Bavaria’s “mad” King Ludwig. Or, take a scenic trip through small villages to Salzburg, well known for the “Sound of Music” movie and Mozart’s birthplace. Or a day trip to Venice - the eternal city of magical waterways, grand palaces and churches. Another scenic day trip crosses the Brenner Pass to Northern Italy’s province of South Tyrol, home of many castles and fabulous wines. Or visit St. Moritz, chic, elegant, grand, with a very cosmopolitan ambiance and a beautiful setting on the lake surrounded by high mountain peaks.

Evenings in Innsbruck offer horse-drawn sleigh rides through the beautiful winter countryside, or a ride on the Olympic Bobsled run. Try your luck at Baccarat, Black Jack, Roulette and Slot Machines.at the Casino in Innsbruck. One of our favorite evenings activities is the Tirolean Folk Night at the Gasthof Sailer. The band plays local dance and folk music and a folklore group performs local dances. There is beer, wine and snacks of hot sausage and Sauerkraut. Previous Happy Time participants will attest to a good time had by all!

Repeat group members will be happy to learn that our friend and past guide, Angelica will again be our guide throughout our stay in Austria. This is our tenth year with Angelica.
